Innovative monitoring of both roofing and pavements.
PRI’s secured and monitored outdoor weathering farm utilizes specially designed roof decks for both steep- and low-slope roofing products. Additional decks are designed to weather pavement specimens in a variety of environmental conditions. Our advanced instrumentation monitors and records temperatures, overall weather conditions, and solar reflectance and emission of products and systems from throughout the world.

ASTM D 4798: Standard Practice for Accelerated Weathering Test Conditions and Procedures of Bituminous Materials (Xenon Arc Method)

The Q-Sun Weatherometer (Xenon Arc Exposure) provides the ability to evaluate raw materials and products in a horizontal plane. Allowing paving materials that are not suited to vertical mounting to be tested. Inquire for the differences in the two methods.

ASTM D 4798: Standard Practice for Accelerated Weathering Test Conditions and Procedures of Bituminous Materials (Xenon Arc Method)

The Xenon Arc Weatherometer (WOM) is the established workhorse and benchmark for the industry.  Ideally suited for roofing asphalts, paints, coating, mastics, plastics and similar materials, numerous material and product specifications require product performance after prescribed exposures.  

 

ASTM D 4799: Standard Practice for Accelerated Weathering Test Conditions and Procedures for Bituminous Materials (Fluorescent UV, water Spray and Condensation Method)

These Weatherometers are used to evaluate the fade resistance of products and materials. Samples are mounted vertically which provides some limitations on the nature and size of the samples.

 

ASTM D 5869: Practice for Dark Oven Heat Exposure of Roofing and Waterproofing Materials

This method allows an unlimited number of conditioning parameters in dark oven heat aging. Parameters are chosen to specification requirements or the specific needs of the evaluation. PRI’s large ovens are suitable for large samples mounted in a variety of ways.

 

Outdoor Weathering

PRI maintains a secure, monitored outdoor weathering farm. It is intended for long term weathering in the harsh Florida environment. Exposure decks are tailored to meet the needs of the samples and exposure. Both large and small samples may be tested and a variety of  of ways to monitor are available.

 

ASTM D 6521 or
AASHTO R 28: Standard Practice for Accelerated Aging of Asphalt Binder Using a Pressurized Aging Vessel (PAV)

Mostly used for PG Binders, PRI’s PAV’s have been used to ‘age’ an assortment of products using standard and specialized conditions. The PAV is often used with Weatherometers and provides the advantage of short ‘aging’ times.

 

ASTM D 2872 or
 AASHTO T 240: Test Method for Effect of Heat and Air on a Moving Film of Asphalt (Rolling Thin-Film Oven Test)

This method focuses on PG, AC and EN binders. It is used as a research tool to ‘age’ bituminous materials by inducing volatile loss under pre-selected parameters of temperature, time and quantity.

 

ASTM D 1754 or
AASHTO T 179: Test Method for Effects of Heat and Air on Asphaltic materials (Thin Film Oven Test)

This method is used on PG, AC and EN binders and has been used as a research tools to ‘age’ bituminous materials by inducing volatile loss under pre-selected parameters of temperature, time and quantity.

 

PRI TM 039: Standard Practice for Simulated Storage Tank Aging

A PRI developed practice for simulating storage tank aging through exposure of asphalt to storage temperatures while under simulated agitation / recirculation. Storage times can be selected to mimic what is used in the field. This practice is well suited for the evaluation of PMA’, engineered binders and/or blended products

 

PRI TM 027: Standard Practice for Asphalt Pavement Weathering (APWS)

The APWS, Asphalt Pavement Weathering System was developed by PRI specifically to provide accelerated weathering of full depth pavements and pavement systems. For more information see our brochure.
